Congressman Ed Whitfield
On the Issues
Family ValuesDuring my time in office, I have consistently supported legislation to reaffirm traditional values important to families in Kentucky’s First District.

I have always supported legislation to protect the unborn and I oppose abortion as a means of on-demand birth control. I voted for the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which creates a separate federal offense for an unborn child when a pregnant mother is attacked or abused. I also voted for the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act, which makes the transporting of a minor across state lines to evade parental abortion notification laws a federal offense.

I support abstinence education as a component of our students' curriculum. Young people today face an increasing number of social pressures in their daily lives. It is increasingly important to provide them with the tools they need to confront these pressures and enable them to make smart, healthy life decisions.

I have opposed activist groups that seek to remove religious references from our daily lives. Last Congress, I cosponsored a Constitutional Amendment that would protect many fundamental freedoms from federal court challenges, such as the right for individuals to voluntarily pray in school, display the Ten Commandments in public, and maintain the words “under God” as part of the Pledge of Allegiance. I am also opposed to same-sex marriage and oppose the efforts of unelected judges to force this issue upon the American people without their consent.

Last Congress, as Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, I led hearings that exposed the online child pornography industry and provided new information parents and kids need to know about online child sex abusers. Additionally, as a member of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Telecommunications, I voted for legislation that would stiffen penalties against broadcasters who air indecent material and that empowers parents to choose expanded programming options that are suitable for their families.
